KAAH Background

KAAH Relief and Development Organization abbreviated as KAAH is a local humanitarian organization working in Somalia since its establishment the year 2001. The initiative came up after a group of Somali concerned professionals came together after carrying out needs assessment on the situation of the Somali people who have been affected by both natural and man-made disasters after the civil war KAAH was founded during 2001 by Somali concern citizens. In the awake of the prolonged insecurity and droughts in Somalia and the increased lack of humanitarian access of humanitarian services to victims in Somalia, the founders agreed to form KAAH to address and mitigate the effects of biting natural and man-made disasters and the socio-economic problems of people in these regions.

After the collapse of strongly centralized Somali military regime in 1991, the socio-economic infrastructure have completed been destroyed leading the collapse of livelihoods of many communities. KAAH targets vulnerable beneficiaries both in urban and rural areas on life-saving activities through emergency response, recovery, livelihoods and developmental activities.. KAAH since its inception and mutual partnerships with global development and local partners has been able to implement humanitarian protection activities in collaboration with its stakeholders. KAAH management team was able to deliver various reliefs, recovery and development oriented interventions at respective regions in which KAAH operates.

KAAH underpinning operational principle is that empowered communities with various effective and relevant reliefs, recoveries and development interventions can break shackles of protracted violent conflict and prolonged cycles of drought situations. KAAH’s own documented lessons learned include the significance of addressing the nexuses between development, good governance and peace building of violent conflict affected communities of its target beneficiaries. This is why KAAH placed top priority on its civic education interventions that have major good governance promotion activities through highlighting the relationships between good governance, durable peace and poverty reduction initiatives towards attaining sustainable local development. KAAH intends to produce tangible outcomes on its relief, recovery and development interventions, and all the three intervention levels will be planned and implemented coherently. Where, in essence its relief interventions should set favorable conditions for reasonable recoveries. On the other hand, its recovery interventions shall pave the way for conditions of attaining sustainable local development at community levels.

In order to sustain the attained positive outcomes and impacts of KAAH implemented projects, KAAH developed interconnected project frameworks. These include enhanced project baseline information framework through advanced data collection tools that captures needs of KAAH target project beneficiaries, project implementation plan framework that systematically prioritize needs of project target beneficiaries, communication framework that effectively communicates with project stakeholders and monitoring and evaluation framework that effectively monitors the implementation of the prioritized project activities. It’s envisioned that through these frameworks will enable KAAH to evaluate through organizational self-evaluations on the relevancies, effectiveness, efficiency and the sustainability of the implemented various projects. The Organization has a Board of Directors comprising seven members. The Board is responsible steering the overall direction of KAAH.

highest ranked body of the organization is the General Assembly who comes together once in a year to review the work of the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is selected by the Assembly and to this they are accountable to them on annual basis. The BOD which the governing body selects the Executive Director who head the management team on the ground. He or She, reports to the Board as they meet twice in a month to review his or her work performance. For duties and responsibilities, please refer to the by-law of the organization. The chain of administration is translated by the organizational structure. Apart from the head office in Mogadishu, the organization has field offices that meant to support the administrative and logistical issues of the field operations. These offices which are currently located in Marka, Jowhar, Guriel, Beletweyne, Kismayo, Baidoa, Wanlaweyn, Mataban, Dhusamareb and South Galkayo comes under the main office for management issues and other directions regarding administration under the leadership of the Executive Director
